5 Tips For Arranging Sanitation For Your Family Reunion

Now that the weather has started to warm up, many families have begun the preparation for reunions. If you've been put on a committee for your family’s reunion this summer, don't forget to plan for their sanitation needs. Even if you've decided to have the reunion at a family member’s home, you still need to plan for additional restroom space. This is particularly important where septic tanks are concerned.

Septic tanks may be able to handle additional waste from a few extra family members without problems. However, that might not be the case with a few dozen extra family members. To avoid sanitation troubles, you may need to rent portable toilets for your next family reunion. Here are five tips that will help you avoid problems when scheduling your rentals.

1. Plan for More Family Than You Anticipate

If you plan to use portable toilets for your family reunion this year, make sure you rent enough. Because portable toilets have a waste holding tank that fills up with each use, you want to avoid issues with overfills. The best way to avoid that problem is to have sufficient facilities for your family. Once you and your rental company determine how many portable toilets you'll need for your anticipated attendee list, add at least one additional unit.

2. Provide Sufficient Room for Families

If your reunion attendee list includes families with young children, you'll want to rent at least one family unit. Family units provide additional space to accommodate changing tables and stroller parking. However, family units don't just provide easier access for parents of young children. These family units also provide additional space for anyone who requires assistance with their restroom needs. This includes the elderly who may need someone to help them.

3. Ensure Wheelchair Accessibility

If you have family members who require the use of a wheelchair or mobility scooter, you need to rent at least one portable toilet unit that is wheelchair accessible. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) approved portable toilets provide ramps for easier wheelchair accessibility. However, they also provide additional space around the toilets, as well as elevated toilets to ensure easier transition to and from the wheelchair.

4. Provide for Proper Hygiene

If you haven't thought about personal hygiene, you probably should, especially if you plan to rent portable toilets. In addition to the toilets, you also need to provide a space for your family members to wash their hands after using the facilities.

Without proper hand washing, germs and bacteria from the toilets will be transferred from person to person throughout the reunion. Unfortunately, that means your family members risk the spread of diseases such as norovirus, E.coli, salmonella, and even hand-foot-mouth disease. To avoid the spread of diseases, rent at least one hand-wash station for your family reunion.

5. Order Additional Supplies

If your family reunion is planned for an entire weekend — or longer — order additional supplies for your portable toilets and hand wash stations. You need to have an ample supply of toilet paper, liquid soap, and paper towels. To help keep the air fresh inside the portable toilets, also ensure that each unit has a supply of air fresheners as well. You should also make sure that each unit is fully stocked throughout the reunion, be sure to conduct random supply inspections. That way, you can restock as needed.
