Outdoor Wedding During COVID-19? 5 Easy Ways to Promote Hygiene
Sep 03, 2020
Outdoor weddings and backyard weddings are increasingly popular during the global COVID-19 era. As most experts agree that being outdoors reduces the risk of transmission of and exposure to the novel coronavirus, your outdoor wedding helps keep everyone safe while sharing your big day.

What more can you do to ensure good sanitation and hygiene by all at your wedding? Here are five ideas for any budget.

1. Add Multiple Restrooms
Make sure that guests and the wedding party alike have access to plenty of restroom options. If people must use the same facilities - one after another - there is little time to clean the restrooms properly and keep surfaces germ-free. In addition, many experts suggest leaving more time between users so that any airborne particles of the coronavirus have time to settle to the ground where they do no harm.

Both issues are partially or fully resolved by providing more than one restroom. Depending on your group size, budget, and space, you might opt for separate bathrooms or a restroom trailer with multiple facilities inside.

2. Use a Bathroom Attendant
A bathroom attendant may seem like an indulgence at a casual outdoor event, but this is a wise investment during the pandemic. A bathroom attendant's primary purpose is not to party with your guests but to see to their comfort and safety.

The attendant can be tasked with cleaning and sanitizing after every guest uses the facilities for maximum safety. In addition, they might oversee the cleanliness of hand washing or sanitizing stations and the area around the portable bathroom facilities. And unlike a friend or guest, an attendant won't be distracted and become lax about their job.

3. Offer Hand Washing Around Food
Hand washing is key to preventing the spread of the coronavirus (as well as other viruses). But in outdoor group situations, it can be difficult to ensure that everyone diligently washes up. Encourage the best practice by setting up a hand washing station where people may come into contact with one another, such as around buffet tables, appetizer stations, the cake, and bars. Remind guests about the stations as they mingle.

4. Place Some Sanitizing Stations
Hand sanitizer is a popular choice when the situation isn't conducive to soap and water. If your space is limited, hand sanitizing stations might be a lifesaver due to their smaller footprint. You can provide more individual sanitizing units in the same space as just one sink that people might have to wait in line for.

Consider placing a hand sanitizing station at the entry point of the wedding, and encourage everyone to take a quick moment to use it. Other good locations include around food tables, near bathrooms (particularly if space is at a premium), and near any group photography locations. Dress them up by decorating the stations in line with the wedding theme, such as with wedding flowers or draping.

5. Embrace the Sanitation Theme
No bride or groom wants to bring down the mood at their event by spending all their time harping on hygiene. Instead, embrace the fact that your wedding is occurring in unique times by making it a fun part of your day.

You might, for instance, craft some thematic portable hand sanitizer bottles as wedding favors. Add cartoonish hygiene-related props to your photo booth. Give kids stickers when they wash their hands at one of the stations. Or offer a prize for the best socially distant group photos and selfies. As they say, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Which of these wedding day tricks can you include to boost the hygiene and safety of your entire wedding group? No matter what your budget or space requirements may be, there is a solution that will help you create the safest day possible.
