Will you rent portable restroom facilities for your outdoor event this winter? With many people turning to the great outdoors for everything - from family reunions to weddings to corporate parties - keeping the rented bathrooms clean and safe during winter is vital for the health and enjoyment of everyone.

How can you ensure your facilities are the best they can be no matter what Mother Nature throws at you? Discover five steps you can take at any event.

1. Consider Restroom Trailers

If the weather may be dicey, consider upgrading your portable bathrooms to restroom trailers. A full trailer provides much more space and comfort for people to get out of the cold, rain, snow, or wind. They include space to hang coats or stow other winter wear. They're often also heated and have warm running water.

Use the extra space to stock some sanitation supplies, like disinfectant wipes, to help people keep things neat and clean. A bathroom attendant should also be able to work in comfort instead of spending the whole day in unpleasant weather.

2. Add Weather Protection

A little extra cover around the bathrooms keeps everyone more comfortable. A simple awning or pop-up cover over the entry protects people from rain and snow. If things may get blustery, consider adding a tent with sides to protect from cold winter winds as well. Not only do walls keep people dry as they enter and exit, but they also prevent mud and reduce debris that might track or blow into the restrooms.

3. Use Natural and Artificial Warmth

Ask your restroom rental service about adding a heater to the unit. Some portable bathrooms may come with these, or you may be able to add one of your own. However, make sure it won't be a safety hazard. Safety issues might include things like placing the heater too close to flammable objects, overloading a power source, or stretching cords where people might trip on them.

Look for other ways to keep the bathroom warmer naturally. You might place it where it will get the sun's warmth for the majority of the day. And if it sits in the protection of a windbreak, this can help prevent even more heat loss. If any available structures are present, such as a barn or outdoor entertainment area, you could use these as a protective windbreak.

4. Keep the Ground Dry

Winter weather makes it even more important to choose a flat, solid surface on which to place the bathrooms and handwashing stations. Concrete or asphalt is ideal, but anywhere likely to stay dry and stable can work. Check overhead and around the bathrooms, too, to ensure tree branches or gutters won't make a muddy mess around the bathrooms. If water puddling or mud may still form, use large mats to keep it at bay.

5. Air Out Bathrooms

If you have rented enough toilets, you should be able to carve out time to air out each bathroom on a regular basis. When weather is bad, bathrooms are more likely to stay closed up and may become odorous quicker than they would if good ventilation was available. Create a set schedule and open up each unit for up to 30 minutes to air out before cleaning. The crisp winter air can do a lot on its own.
